We Started Logging Interventional Glaucoma Consults in EyeAdvisor
Interventional glaucoma is changing the treatment conversation. EyeAdvisor now has an AI IG consult coach in testing, so those conversations can become visible, reviewable data.

For most of EyeAdvisor’s early life, we talked heavily about refractive and premium cataract consults.
That made sense. Those are patient journeys where the conversation has a huge impact on what happens next. Patients have choices, questions, fears, expectations, and often a lot to process before they feel comfortable making a decision.
They are not the only conversations in ophthalmology where that is true.
Interventional glaucoma consults are now live inside EyeAdvisor. We are not making a lot of noise about it. It is still in testing, and I am not saying every EyeAdvisor practice has this workflow today.
I think the reason we built an AI IG consult coach is worth talking about.
Interventional glaucoma changes the patient conversation
Interventional glaucoma reflects a more proactive approach to glaucoma management, with procedural options considered earlier rather than viewing intervention only as something that comes after years of topical therapy.
That shift does more than change the clinical pathway.
It changes the conversation.
A patient may have spent years thinking about glaucoma as something managed with pressure checks, monitoring, and drops. Then the physician recommends an intervention.
The physician may have a very clear clinical reason for that recommendation.
The patient is hearing something very different:
Why now?
Is my glaucoma getting worse?
Why change something that seems to be working?
What does this procedure actually do?
What happens if I wait?
Those questions matter because the recommendation and the patient’s understanding of the recommendation are not the same thing.
A good recommendation can still be poorly understood
I believe physicians should make clear recommendations when they believe a treatment is appropriate.
Patients come to specialists for expertise, not just a menu of options.
But making the recommendation is only half of the communication problem.
The patient still needs to understand it.
Why this treatment?
Why at this point in their disease?
What problem is the physician trying to solve?
What should they expect next?
And maybe most importantly, what is the patient actually worried about?
That last question is easy to miss.
A patient can nod through an explanation and still leave uncertain. They can say they want to “think about it” when the real issue is fear, timing, confusion, cost, or simply not understanding why anything needs to change.
If all the practice sees afterward is the outcome, that entire part of the patient journey disappears.
The outcome does not explain the conversation
This is the same problem that originally made refractive and cataract consults interesting to us.
A practice can know what happened without knowing why it happened.
The patient moved forward.
The patient did not move forward.
The patient wanted more time.
Those outcomes are useful, but they do not tell leadership whether the patient received a clear recommendation, whether their biggest concern surfaced, or whether the next step made sense.
The answers are inside the conversation.
That is the layer EyeAdvisor is designed to make visible through tools like Conversation Capture, Live Consult Coaching, and human coaching.
We are now applying that same idea to interventional glaucoma.
An AI IG consult coach, and the data inside the consult
The actual news is simple.
EyeAdvisor is logging interventional glaucoma consults, and an AI IG consult coach can review those conversations the same way we already review LASIK and cataract consults.
It is live in the product. It is quiet on purpose. We are still testing it.
What we want is consult data, not a scoreboard.
How was the physician’s recommendation communicated?
What did the patient ask next?
Where did confusion show up?
Was there a clear next step?
Across enough conversations, are there patterns a coach can actually work with?
That is the point of the data.
Not turning glaucoma into a pressure process.
Not creating a talk track.
And definitely not having AI make clinical decisions.
The physician owns the clinical recommendation.
The AI IG consult coach exists to help the practice see the conversation around that recommendation.
This is about communication, not more procedures
That distinction is important.
A successful interventional glaucoma consult is not automatically one where a procedure gets scheduled.
The treatment has to be clinically appropriate, and that decision belongs to the doctor.
What the practice can improve is whether the patient actually understands the recommendation they were given.
Did we explain it clearly?
Did we listen?
Did we uncover the real concern?
Did the patient leave knowing what happens next?
That is a much healthier way to think about conversion in medicine.
Better conversion should be a byproduct of better patient conversations, not pressure.
The consult is becoming a bigger data source in ophthalmology
EyeAdvisor already supports a growing range of ophthalmology procedures, including cataract, refractive, interventional glaucoma, retina, cornea, and oculoplastics.
What connects those categories is not the procedure.
It is the conversation.
There is a huge amount of information inside the way patients ask questions, react to recommendations, express concerns, and make decisions.
Historically, practices have had almost no structured way to see that information.
That is changing.
I think the next layer of practice intelligence in ophthalmology will come from understanding not only what happened in the patient journey, but what was actually said along the way.
Interventional glaucoma is one of the places we are testing that idea, with an AI consult coach sitting on top of the conversation data.
I am excited to see what we learn.
What would EyeAdvisor hear in your consult rooms?
If your practice is having important patient conversations that disappear the moment the visit ends, we can show you what it looks like to make that layer visible.
